CUSTOM JEWELRY
A Husband’s Love
This project still makes me smile. The piece of art glass was made by the client’s friend. He wanted it made into a necklace for his wife and when asked what he had in mind simply said “I have no idea. I trust your judgement”. I asked just one question: Please tell me a little about your wife and let’s see where that leads us. Here is what he wrote:
Just to give you an idea, my wife is the kind of woman who picks up roadkill and skins it herself without gloves. She spent years backpacking alone through India. She has sailed with me on a two-week journey a hundred miles offshore and she has enough grit and stamina to take the wheel for 8 hours at a time in the dark.
I grinned the first time I read it. Then I read it again two more times, slowly. What he gave me was a sensual description. He wasn’t describing his wife, but rather his woman. That was the inspiration I needed. So the backplate is one solid piece of sterling silver signifying her strength. The four prongs on each side are her fingers, strong enough to hold a ship steady in the wind. The bottom prong is a series of flames…his love for her is strong and helps to secure what is important to them both.
