CUSTOM JEWELRY

A Husband’s Love

This project still makes me smile. The piece of art glass was made by the client’s friend. He wanted it made into a necklace for his wife and when asked what he had in mind simply said “I have no idea. I trust your judgement”. I asked just one question: Please tell me a little about your wife and let’s see where that leads us. Here is what he wrote:

Just to give you an idea, my wife is the kind of woman who picks up roadkill and skins it herself without gloves. She spent years backpacking alone through India. She has sailed with me on a two-week journey a hundred miles offshore and she has enough grit and stamina to take the wheel for 8 hours at a time in the dark.

I grinned the first time I read it. Then I read it again two more times, slowly. What he gave me was a sensual description. He wasn’t describing his wife, but rather his woman. That was the inspiration I needed. So the backplate is one solid piece of sterling silver signifying her strength. The four prongs on each side are her fingers, strong enough to hold a ship steady in the wind. The bottom prong is a series of flames…his love for her is strong and helps to secure what is important to them both.

Elegant Woman

Now this project was quite different. She is tall, slim, almost regal in her bearing. She is also wickedly funny, gives great hugs and is the first to volunteer for neighborhood events. She raised four kids in an antique house, created a children’s theater program and is now madly in love with her first grandchild. This dear friend was preparing for her son’s wedding. Once the dress decision was done she asked my opinion on what jewelry to add. We designed this to sit perfectly in the neckline. Upon her return from the wedding her husband said he would be paying me for it because his wife looked radiant on this special day. . Their son then said no, he was paying for it as a special gift. I let them fight that out. I love seeing her in this piece.

This is all sterling silver. The focal is essentially pleated for visual texture and then the chain drops add length without bulk to complement her long hair and tall frame. The chain is open and airy. The combination is elegant and so is she.
